SKYE BRIDGE 300x225 HIGHLAND TOUR OCT 2013

THE HIGHLAND TOUR, OCT 18TH – 21ST 2013:

With Mike’s in-depth knowledge of the Highlands, this 4 day, 3 night tour of the finest scenery in Britain will be a cracker.

We meet and start in the Lake District at one of Colin’s 5 star award winning luxury hotels for breakfast, the Howbeck in Windermere, giving our tour group an opportunity to mix and discuss what fun lies ahead for the next few days. Then it’s off through some stunning Lake District mountain scenery and into Scotland, lunching on the banks of Loch Lomond. On through Glencoe and over the Corran ferry, we do the first part of the unofficial Ardnamurchan TT, a sublime mix of quiet and fast A roads and scenic single tracks, we spend our first night on the shores of Loch Shiel at the Glenfinnan Hotel, with the probability of a lively local bar and the possibility of some live music.
The second day sees us finish the TT, driving up past lochs, through mountainous glens and over the stunning back road on the south side of Loch Ness. In through Inverness’s back door to rattle a few windows and then away up to the intimate Oystercatcher at Portmahomack for a seafood spectacular. We then head cross-country to treat ourselves to the Achnasheen straights, eye-blinkingly long and eye-wateringly fast, making our way down to the Skye Bridge and our night at the Sligachan Hotel, a great base for exploring the Cuillin mountain range. If time allows, we pay a quick visit to the Talisker distillery, offering one of the more peaty malts, and home to a special whisky, if memory serves me correctly, the smoking Talisker 100, but I can’t guarantee the memory!
The next day after a proper climber’s breakfast, we go back over the Skye Bridge, zip up the road by Loch Cluanie, flanked by the Five Sisters on the north side and about Nine Brothers on the south, mountains that is. Down to Spean Bridge we travel over to Laggan, up to Aviemore and then into the Cairngorms and over the Tomintoul High Road, the highest tarmacked road in the UK (featured recently in ‘evo’ mag). Down to the banks of Loch Tay, we detour up the beautiful Glen Lyon road and over to the idiosyncratic Mhor84 Hotel for a few last beers and a boisterous dinner, no doubt!! We ease our way home on the Monday!!!
